Spring Golf Rules- Applicable for Coed Golf

THE TOURNAMENT

The team consists of six players from the college including at least one woman. The best four scores, including at least one non-male player, are combined to determine the team score. Teams playing with all men will not be allowed to advance to the championship round nor win the championship. Ties are broken by using the lowest scores of the next two golfers or the blind scores. All players must register with the Intramural starter to receive starting tee assignments. If a player retires before completing a round, no score is recorded and they are ineligible to count in the team score. In the event of inclement weather or darkness golfing may be postponed or canceled. If a golfer is on the course when the postponement occurs only incomplete or unplayed holes may be replayed. Golfers will be assigned to groups of no more than four persons. Groups must have representatives from at least two colleges. Players must clearly write their name, gender and college on the card. Two people in each group must keep the scores. The score cards are official when all players sign both cards at the conclusion of play. The nine hole tournament is played on the front nine holes only.

THE RULES

USGA rules govern play with the following exceptions: golfers may ‘pick, clean and place’ the ball no nearer the hole and not more than one club length from the original spot in their own fairway or rough, but not in hazards; a lost ball or out of bounds can be remedied by taking a penalty stroke and either shooting again from the same spot or by playing a second ball from a spot no more than two club lengths from the edge of the trouble spot. Ten stroke maximum per hole. Golfers must observe etiquette: for instance, smooth footprints in traps; replace all divots; avoid long delays; no littering; etc.

SCORING

1. Six entrants, including a minimum of one non-male player, from each college may participate, however only the lowest four scores (including the lowest non-male player’s) count for the team stroke total.

2. Each college’s total team scores will be compared against each divisional rival and a win-loss record will be determined with each win equal to four Tyng Cup points. The top three Tyng point scoring colleges in each division will advance to the final round.

3. In case of ties, the colleges concerned will employ the use of their fifth lowest score or the ‘blind golfers’ assigned score. If a tie persists, the colleges will then go to their sixth lowest score. If no solution is found then the captains of the respective colleges will designate one golfer and a sudden death playoff will ensue.

4. Awards will be given to the championship team and to the best man and woman golfer.

5. A team must have a minimum of three golfers to start a match and a blind score (of 75 for a woman or 70 for a man) is awarded for the absent golfer. The highest score possible for any golfer who completes the nine holes is (74 for a woman and 69 for a man). Teams playing without an all male team will not be allowed to advance to the championship round, nor may a team win the championship with an all male team.

ELIGIBILITY

All undergraduate and persons officially associated with a residential college except former varsity golf award winners and current intercollegiate team players are eligible to participate. Current team players are those individuals who have practiced with the intercollegiate team on or after March 1. Any instances involving special circumstances require a review by the Athletic Secretaries Council.
